Find the door

Halfway down Saltgate Passage, under the iron lantern. The steps go down, not up.

A narrow cobbled passage at night between old townhouses, a wrought iron lantern over an arched doorway with steps, wet cobbles reflecting the light

Safety and the word

Before you go down, the porter gives you the safe word: “Saltgate”. Say it out loud anywhere in the cellar and the working lights come up, the actors step back, and a guide walks you out the short way. Nobody asks why. Guides who aren’t part of the story are in every room, and every vault has an exit within fifteen metres.

Before you come

  • Not for anyone pregnant, epileptic or with a heart condition
  • Strobe and haze in Ward Nine and the chapel
  • Fifty-two steps down, no lift; the bar upstairs is step-free
  • Wear shoes you can walk in; boots are provided for the chapel
  • Phones, cameras and torches go in the free lockers

Questions people ask

How scary is it, really?

Each walk-through has a dread level from 1 to 5. The Night Porter is gentle, The Lodger slow and creepy, Ward Nine loud and dark, the chapel properly hard. Start where you’re comfortable.

Will the actors touch me?

Only in Ward Nine (an actor may take your arm) and the Drowned Chapel (they will). Tell the porter at the start if you’d rather not, and they’ll know.

Can I leave halfway through?

Any time. Say “Saltgate” and a guide walks you out. Your group can carry on or come with you.

How old do I need to be?

15 and over for the main walk-throughs (18 for the chapel), 12 and over with an adult for The Night Porter. We ask for ID.

Can I come on my own?

Yes. We may pair you with another small group, unless you book a whole slot for yourself.

Can I change my time?

Move your booking up to 24 hours before, as often as you like. Refunds up to 48 hours before.
